Explore a Winter Wonderland with Breckenridge Winter Hikes

When it comes to winter activities, Breckenridge is known for its amazing skiing and snowboarding. However, this Colorado town is also home to other fantastic winter adventures. Enjoy a warm, cozy place to call home during your getaway by booking a vacation rental from Alpine Meadows Management. Our Breckenridge rentals put you close to everything you need to make the most out of your winter escape, including trails perfect for snowy hikes.

A Checklist of Wonderful Winter Hikes

One of the best ways to take in Breckenridge's snowy landscape is on hiking trails. Depending on the snowfall, you may need equipment like snowshoes. There are hundreds of miles of trails throughout the area, which means snowshoers of all skill levels can find the perfect path.

  • The Sallie Barber Mine Trail in the White River National Forest is a 2.8-mile out and back trail. Take in breathtaking winter views of town as you work your way to the old mining site. This is a popular trail, so parking can be limited at times.
  • A wide range of trails start at Carter Park, including the Moonstone Trail and Barney Ford Trail. Work your way through neighborhoods or head in the other direction and explore the snow trails. Some course portions are steep, so be sure to get traction control gear for your boots.
  • Start your snowshoe hike near South Illinois High and follow the South Illinois Creek Trail. At the end of the climb, take in the beautiful views from the wooden bench on the overlook.
  • If you're looking for a long hike, you'll enjoy the almost 20-mile point-to-point Boreas Pass Road trail. This is one of Breckenridge's most popular snowshoe and winter hiking trails.
  • For a unique experience, let a knowledgeable guide take you around the trails at the Breckenridge Nordic Center. Enjoy an interpretive experience as you learn about the local history and ecology of Summit County, all while enjoying a snowshoe hike.

No matter what trail you choose, it's essential to be appropriately dressed. For winter hiking, this means waterproof winter boots that are insulated, layers of clothes that are breathable and dry wicking, and traction systems if you are not using snowshoes. Go Brek has a helpful guide on properly layering for winter activities.
