A Guide to Wildlife in Colorado | What to See in Breckenridge

Breckenridge is home to more than memorable activities. It’s also home to breathtaking nature. There are countless ways to surround yourself with stunning scenery during a vacation with Alpine Meadows Management. No matter what outdoor adventures you embark on, keep your eyes open for wildlife in this Colorado region.

While the animals you may stumble upon look cute, you should not approach them. By staying a safe distance away, humans and animals can coexist with minimal incidents. Other important
safety tips include not feeding wild animals and keeping your dogs on a leash if they join you on your outing.

A Checklist of Animals Found Near Breckenridge

There is a vast list of wildlife in Breckenridge, but we compiled a list of some of the most common creatures. One of the best places to go for wildlife viewing is Cucumber Gulf Wildlife Preserve

  • The largest animal in the state are moose, which can weigh up to 1,200 pounds. Male moose, known as bulls, stand up to six feet tall. These animals are territorial, so knowing how to tell if they become agitated is important.
  • While moose are easy to spot, red foxes can be a bit more tricky. Often found in open woodlands, they can run at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. Look for their black-tipped ears and white-tipped tail.
  • If out and about in the forests of Breckenridge, you may spot a black bear. These smart and curious animals are most active from mid-March through early November. Because bears are always looking for food, it’s crucial to secure your trash and never leave food or trash in your car.
  • Colorado is home to two species of deer: mule deer and white-tailed. The former has large ears and evenly forked antlers. The latter has smaller ears and a signature white tail.
  • One of the most popular types of wildlife viewing is birdwatching. Throughout the year, you can see a number of species, including the Canada jay, chickadees, robins, hawks, and ospreys.
