What Should You Wear?

While winter in Breckenridge is cold enough for feet of snow to fall, you can still get warm on your adventures. We recommend wearing a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating middle layer, and a waterproof outer layer. Try to avoid cotton as it can hold in moisture and make you cold. Before you walk out the door, double-check you have gloves, a hat, and sunglasses or goggles.

Where Can You Find Rentals?

If you’re new to this sport, you likely don’t have the necessary equipment, but don’t worry. There are plenty of places in Breckenridge that have what you’re looking for. In addition to local outfitters, both the Breckenridge Nordic Center and Gold Run Nordic Center can set you up with quality shoes, boots, and poles.

Where Can You Go Snowshoeing?

Breckenridge is home to a number of beginner-friendly paths. Both the Breckenridge and Golf Run centers have groomed, well-marked trails that are ideal for learning on. There’s also a groomed section of the Summit County rec path that extends from the Breckenridge Red Center. Ideally, you want to avoid steep backcountry terrain until you're more comfortable. 

No matter which trail you choose, it’s important to have good technique. You want to walk with a slightly wider stance to help prevent your snowshoes from overlapping. If you’re going uphill, dig your toes in; lean back slightly when going downhill.
