Look Up | A Guide to Stargazing in Breckenridge, Colorado

Breckenridge is known as an outdoor enthusiast's playground, and for good reason. From exploring local hiking trails to feeling the thrill of whitewater rafting, there’s no shortage of things to do on a vacation with Alpine Meadows Management. However, you don’t have to stop the fun and return to your Breckenridge vacation rental when the sun starts to set. Stay up late and enjoy unbelievable sights by going stargazing on your Colorado vacation.

The Best Stargazing Spots Near Breckenridge

Breckenridge is an ideal location for stargazing thanks to its high elevation and being away from major light pollution. In addition, the low humidity and clean alpine air help enhance viewing conditions.

Late summer to fall is one of the best times to enjoy this laid-back activity, especially around a new moon. There are several fantastic spots to go stargazing near Breckenridge, but here are a few of our favorites.

  • Hoosier Pass is a pull-off with panoramic views and minimal light, which is a great option for seeing constellations and meteor showers.
  • While all of Boreas Pass is scenic, we recommend heading to the Baker’s Tank landmark or the historic section house for unbelievable sky views.
  • Found just north of Breckenridge is Sapphire Point, which features a stone seating overlook above the Dillon Reservoir.

Another fun option is to go on a
guided star party with Mountain Top Explorium. Choose from a private astronomy session, which can take place at your Breckenridge vacation rental, or one of their monthly SkyQuest events.

Tips for a Fun Nighttime Adventure

Knowing where to go stargazing is only part of the equation. Using something like Clear Sky Charter or another AccuWeather app helps you check for cloud cover and transparency to know if it’s a good night to go out.

You’ll also want to ensure you have the right tools. A red flashlight helps you navigate in the dark while preventing light pollution, and a star chart or app helps you identify what you’re seeing. Things like binoculars and telescopes are not required to see the constellations, but they do help you get a better view of planets and other objects in the sky.
